Young cross country star Andries Sesedi ran a personal best to claim victory in the World Aids Day Half Marathon at the Katlehong Sports Complex on Sunday (Dec 1).
Sesedi blitzed around the 21,1km distance in a time of 68 minutes and three seconds to beat Tsitsing Seleshoge into second position by 32 seconds, with Kwanda Longoza completing the podium just over a minute further back.
Sesedi, from Mohlakeng’s Colossus Athletics Club, beat his previous half marathon best of 1:08:38 which he set in Port Elizabeth at the South African Half Marathon Championships in July this year.
In the women’s race Thato Pule was timed at 1.12.01 to beat Glenda Williams (1.13.37) by just over a minute while Thuli Mkhanazi (1.14.33) rounded off the podium.
The event was held in support of World AIDS Day which is commemorated all over the world on December 1. The event provides an opportunity for competitors and spectators to unite in the fight against HIV, to show support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate those who have died from an AIDS-related illness.
