Race weekends can be hectic. There are early starts, busy registration venues, kit to organise and, of course, the small matter of getting yourself to the start line in one piece. So when you find somewhere that gives you a chance to slow things down, it’s worth mentioning. That’s exactly what we liked about MyPond Stenden Hotel in Port Alfred.
Set alongside the Kowie River, the hotel has a lovely relaxed feel to it. The river views give it a real sense of place, and it’s the kind of setting where you can step away from the race-day buzz and actually breathe for a bit.
There’s a choice of rooms, including Classic, Twin and Family Rooms, as well as River-Side Suites and an Executive Suite. The rooms are comfortable and well equipped, with the usual essentials including tea and coffee-making facilities, a fridge and TV. If you’re after something a little more spacious, the River-Side Suites are a particularly good option.

For those of us who spend a fair amount of time around races, the practical stuff matters too. There’s free on-site parking and WiFi, which makes things just that little bit easier.
What really makes MyPond Stenden Hotel stand out, though, is the combination of comfort and setting. You’re close enough to everything you need in Port Alfred, but once you’re back at the hotel, the river gives life a peaceful feel that Team #FinishTime relished after a busy day of race timing.
