Feb 2020: This toolkit is your passport to sport

Good news in 2021? Surely not? Of course there would not be any good news without a few setbacks along the road as well. Hot on the heels of the recent easing of the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions and the relaxing of alcohol restrictions, a slew of sports bodies have indicated that South African sportsmen, sportswomen, administrators and service providers are also able to cautiously begin some celebrations as events are reintroduced. However, the news that…

Jan 2020: Good riddance 2020 & welcome 2021?

Well, 2021 has not had such a good start: Lockdowns, riots in Washington, loadshedding, flooding, volcanoes and a host of cancelled sports events means the start of the new year has not been the instant turnaround we hoped for. More importantly, for many, both in South Africans and overseas, the so-called second wave of the pandemic has turned personal with numbers and statistics becoming names and faces. However, it is not all gloom and doom.…

Nobody needs to be reminded that the sports industry has been hit particularly hard hit by Covid-19 in 2020, and no matter what your personal feelings are on the pandemic and…

Sept 2020: Let’s spring back into action

As we attempt to negotiate 2020, there is a ray or two of hope that sportsmen and women will be able to compete in some real races in the not too distant future. AUG 2020: Durban City Marathon goes virtual

The popular Durban City Marathon has followed the trend for 2020 and will join the growing list of virtual races, with athletes having a two-day window to complete the 42,2km, 21,1km, 10km or 5km options. The popular race on the Durban beachfront attracted over 5000 entries in April 2019, but at the corresponding time this year the event was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and was finally forced to be cancelled in early July.…

July 2020: It is safest to run with a mask

New York state governor Andrew Cuomo recently chastised Americans by pointing out that a mask pulled down below the mouth is nothing more than a chinstrap. His comments come as the debate about wearing masks becomes ever-more politicised in the United States. In South Africa a similar debate is raging among sportsmen and women. As we stagger through the ever-more confusing levels of lockdown, athletes are asking if there is any danger to exercising with…

June 2020: Let’s be safe out there

Durban and Pietermaritzburg should have been the centre of the South African road-running scene last week with 25 000 people scheduled to be squeezed on the narrow roads between the two KZN cities on Sunday, June 14. Instead South African (and international) athletes were spread apart as far as possible and tackling 20 000 individual virtual races. As the national Covid-19 numbers have grown at an alarming rate over the past few weeks, nobody can argue…
