FinishTime breaking new ground in race timing

By far one of the most popular and visited results pages in the history of FinishTime was that of Mandela Day Marathon with just under 300 000 results searches on the day of writing (27 August), making it the third highest searched event where Finishtime recorded results. The other two being Aquelle Midmar Mile in 2014 (500 000 searches) and 2017 Sanlam Cape Town Marathon (just under 500 000).

Live Timing

Mandela Day Marathon

History was made at the Mandela Day Marathon, when FinishTime introduced for the first time Live 5km split timing for the 10km, Half Marathon and Marathon, timing a total of 17 500 runners across all three races.

Being able to provide the 5km timing splits is yet another innovation of FinishTime and means that those who are not able to watch the race unfold live on Television, can now follow how the race unpacks at the front end as well as tracking their friends and families more accurately than ever before.

All three races, 10km, Half Marathon and Marathon finished at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site, some 5km outside of Howick. Unlike with most races, the starting points of each race were not close to, or at the same venue of the finish, rather all three races were Point-to-Point races, meaning they begin and end at different venues far apart from each other. In this case the start of each race was exactly 10km (Howick Sports Grounds), 21.1km (Hillary Road, Hilton) and 42,2km (Manaye Hall, Pietermaritzburg) from the finish. This meant having three separate crews at the start venue of for each of the three different starts. The advantage of having all three races on the same route meant that the 5km timing splits used for the marathon were also used for the 10km and Half Marathon Races.

The Mandela Day Marathon weekend was a busy one, as not only were the 10km, Half Marathon and Marathon results put out by FinishTime, but also the Mandela Day Triathlon and Youth Run on 25 August.

FinishTime were responsible for ensuring the allocation of race chips to race numbers, assisting in the pre-race registration, provision of safety pins and sorting out of queries during the race pack collection period.

Almost 30 000 results captured

August was busy month for the crew of FinishTime, timing a total of 14 races across South Africa, including one race in Swakopmund, Namibia. The busiest weekends were the 4 August and 26 August, where no less than three events were timed on a single day.

28 610 results were captured over the 14 races, with the bulk being the Mandela Day Marathon (17500) and the three ladies’ races (Totalsports Ladies Race Cape Town and Johannesburg 9 August) and the Spar Ladies race in Pietermaritzburg (19 August) the next biggest fields with 2780, 3884 and 1693 finishers recorded showing once again how the women’s running market is growing as these races were open only to women.

Spring Marathon Season around the corner

1 September is officially the first day of Spring and Spring brings in Spring Marathon Season with Finisthime recording no less than 15 events in the month. From Triathlons, to Mountain Races to the only IAAF Gold Label event on the continent, the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, Finishtime will once again ensure that results will be accurate, easily accessible and in the case of Cape Town Marathon, once again will have Live 5km splits, taking race timing to another level.
